XoftSpySE Anti-Spyware Test/Review

1. Installation - Simple as can be.

2. User Interface - The user interface has been updated with a new look, though it does maintain the same usability and the menu options are also different but it is overall an improvement from the last version.

The navigation menu of this tool is very simple and self explanatory the options are "About", "Tools", "Schedule", "Backup", "Ignore" and "Scan". Under Tools there are two important components, the Startup Editor where the user can un-select programs that automatically start during system bootup. Also the Browser Helper Objects displays all the current items that automatically load up on Internet Explorer, many of these are legitimate but it gives the user a top view of everything labeled as an add-on to the browser.

3. The Schedule - This is an important component where the user can be proactive and set a specific date and time for the program to run and scan the system thoroughly to detect any new infections.

4. The Backup and Ignore Tabs - the backup tab is where the programs automatically stores items after a clean up, in some cases when a scan is done and infections found certain needed files or registry entries may be deleted. Should this happen, the user is able to restore items by browsing the backups

The Ignore tab helps users add items that the program detects and considers malicious but in fact aren't, during scans the user can select specific items to add to the ignore list so they're never detected again.

It's here where a problem may exist, the program should be able to determine this better, or have a way to learn that certain program install are safe and not detect legitimate program associated files during scans.

5. The Scan tab - This area has 3 options, "Full Scan", "Quick Scan" and "Custom Scan". It's recommended that he user run a Full Scan the first time the program is installed, this scan level also takes the longest but is absolutely necessary in order to detect every threat.

Unfortunately the program also lacks an option to immunize the system after scanning and finding and removing threats, this option is found in a free program known as Spybot Search and Destroy, which was also run on the same test system and not surprisingly the scan results for both programs were very different. XoftSpySE did find more hits and took slightly longer to finish.
