Speedy PC Test/Review

1. Installation - Very simple.

2. User Interface - The overall feel of the user interface is rather friendly, only a few obvious options are available: "Scan", "Options", "Restore", "Tuner" and "Results".

The Scan tab provides the user with pre-selected options for where the tool should concentrate scanning. It is recommended that all these items be left checked for the tool to perform a thorough scan. The scan results for the test system we ran this on looked like this:

This test system (Windows XP SP2) was built for this particular test and shows a rather high number of incorrect entries and associations that need to be corrected. The trial version of the software only scans and reports errors, but will not make any corrections until the software has been properly registered.

Further anlysis of the "File/Path References" results show 159 hits, all of which come from registry entries, this is a very high number of incorrect file associated entries. These are the types of entries that cluter up the registry and the more they accumulate the more a PC struggles and begins to show it in its performance.

3. Options - The Options tab provides the user with some further configurations, one that stands out the most is the "Create a system restore point before repairing errors", which is a smart option in case valid entries and associations are removed.

In this same area the user has an Ignore List tab, which is handy for making sure valid entries never get detected again, and the very useful "Scheduling" feature where the tool can be automated to run at specific times

4. Restore - The Restore tab allows the user to bring back corrections that may have been erroneous. This does occur quite often and this is why it's important to mame use of the Ignore List. By selecting the latest restore point and clicking "restore" the PC's last corrections will be reverted.

5. Tuner - The Tuner performs further and more in depth performance related analysis and corrections, though the bulk of these corrections will be done during the initial scan.

Overall Outcome/Rating: It's certainly worth a try for $29.95, the tool can offer a good level of optimization options for the average PC, though it falls behind on advanced features, which are more adequately covered by tools like System Suite by Avanquest, which include real time scanning, online protection, and an internet speed optimizer. Speedy PC will do the job for a PC that runs the most typical programs, such as office applications, it handles applications errors well, but overall it is not as proactive as the more advanced suites.
